أَلَسْتَAre you not تَرىseeing الظَّلامَthe darkness وقَدْand already تَوَلّىhas departed
وعُنْقودَand the cluster of الثُّرَيّاthe Pleiades وقَدْand already تَدَلّىhas hung low
Do you not see the darkness now departed,
Do you not see the darkness as it departs
and the cluster of the Pleiades hanging low?
And the Pleiades as they hang low?
فَدونَكَso take for yourself قَهْوَةًwine لَمْdid not يُبْقَleave مِنْهاof it
تَقادُمُthe passing of عَهْدِهاits years إِلاَّexcept الأَقَلاَّthe smallest amount
So take wine, of which nothing has been left
So brew a coffee whose age remains
by its long aging except the smallest amount.
Only its grounds.
بَزَلْناwe tapped دَنَّهاits wine jar واللَّيْلُand the night داجٍdark
فَصَيَّرَتِthen it turned الدُّجىthe darkness شَمْساًa sun وظِلاَّand shade
We tapped its jar while the night was dark;
We slipped closer as the night grew dim
then it turned the darkness into sun and shade.
And the gloom made a sun and shade.
