حورٌ شَغَلْنَ قُلوبَنا بِفَراغِ

لِرَسائِلَ قَصُرَتْ عَنْ الإِبْلاغِ

Dark-eyed maidens preoccupied our hearts with emptiness,

because of messages that fell short of expression.

ومَنَعْنَ ورْدَ خُدودِهِنَّ فَلَمْ نُطِقْ

قَطْفاً لَهُ لِعَقارِبِ الأَصْداغِ

And they withheld the rose of their cheeks, so we could not

pluck it, because of the scorpions at their temples.
