وَلَقَدْand indeed تَلَقَّيْتُI greeted الصَّباحَthe morning بِمِثْلِهِwith its equal
لاno بَلْrather بِأَشْرَقَwith one brighter مِنْهُthan it فيin لأْلائِهِits radiance
And indeed I greeted the morning with its equal,
I greeted the morning in the same way
No, rather, with one brighter than it in its radiance.
No, but more radiant in its splendor
وَرَضِيتُand I was content مِنْinstead of وَصْلِunion with الحَبيبِthe beloved وبُعْدِهِand his distance
بِدُنُوِّwith the nearness of مَنْزِلِهِhis dwelling وَطُولِand the length of جَفائِهِhis coldness
And I was content, instead of union with the beloved and his distance,
And I was content with the union of the beloved and his distance
With his dwelling's nearness and his prolonged coldness.
With the nearness of his abode and the length of his disdain
وَسَمِعْتُand I heard عَذْلَthe rebuke of عَواذِليmy reproachers لَمّاwhen مَشَىwalked
إِصْباحُthe dawn of هَذاthis الشَيْبِgray hair فيthrough إِمْسَائِهِits dusk
And I heard my reproachers' rebuke when there walked
And I heard the reproach of reproachers when he walked away
The dawn of this gray hair through its dusk.
This grey morning in its evening
سَأَعودُI shall return فيto غَيِّthe folly of الشَّبابِyouth وإِنْand even though غَداhas become
رُشْدُthe wisdom of المَشِيبِgray hair مُقَنِّعيveiling me بِرِدَائِهِwith its cloak
I shall return to youth's folly, even though now
I will return to the folly of youth tomorrow
The wisdom of gray hair veils me with its cloak.
Though the wisdom of old age disguises me in its cloak
