Search my heart and see: has anyone dwelt within it
Search my heart and find if there dwelled
But you, O my heart's desire, O its masters?
Other than you, O joy of my heart, O my beloved

No, and your beauty which nothing equals
None but its own have dwelt there, O people of love.
None dwelled but the people of love, my own people

ليس يدري الحبّ إلا من يعانيه
Your dead one—can anyone among mankind but you revive him?
Are you not the only ones who give life to the dead among people?
None knows love except one who suffers it.
None knows love but those who suffer it

من طلب غالي سمح فيه يغاليه
I have offered my soul for you—where is its buyer?
I have given my soul for you, who will buy it?
Whoever seeks something precious gives freely, paying dearly for it.
Who sought the dear gave generously to him

Have mercy on the love-stricken one for what he endures
Mercy to the desperate from what he suffers
From a watcher who bars him from what he hopes for,
From a watcher who prevents him from what he desires

Or a reproacher who hurts him for loving the one he seeks.
Or a reproachful lover who hurts him
For love of my all, I would ransom him with absolutely everything.
In a total love I ransom him with all

How delightful his reproach, and how sweet his unjust treatment!
How good is his reproach and how sweet is his gathering
I have put my hope in God for myself—none who hopes in Him is disappointed—
I have hoped in Allah that my hopes do not fail

And his companions, friends, and loyalists
As long as a caravan travels by night to Yathrib with its chanting camel-driver.
No caravan traveled to Yathrib with its guide
