O my enchanter, how long have you kept up this defiance?

I am the one whose heart and liver are ashes.

O my comfort, O my solace and my desire.

I long for union with you, while you desire separation.

O beloved, how strange this is:

You forsake me, though you are my beloved.

And you are the physician for my ailment.

And you are my heart's desire and the core of my heart.

And my comfort—and you are the pupil of my eye.

Your nearness is my life, and separation is death.

May I not live if I love anyone but you.

I see you, O my heart's desire, I see you.

You have denied my eyes sweet sleep.

O my enchanter, how unjust you are!

Who taught you such cruelty toward me?

You forsake me, while I show you mercy.

Killing me is forbidden; fear the God of humankind.

And hasten our meeting and be generous, O Su'ad.

Have mercy on one tormented, love-crazed, and wronged

by the tyranny of love for you, O you with a figure like a Rudayni spear.

Reunite with me, my beloved; how long will you prolong estrangement?

Perhaps it will quench the flints' fire within my breast.

My body is wasted away because of you.

    And my mind is preoccupied.

And my patience, too, has run out.

My liver is cut to pieces by sharp Syrian blades.

And my entrails, too, are filled with qatad thorns.
