O gazelle of Aydid—protection, protection!
O gentle gazelle, grant me safety and peace
Since your departure, the heart is parched and thirsty.
After you my heart is desolate with distress

I have complained of my patience; have mercy, my lords.
I complain of my patience, have mercy my masters
And were I to complain of love to stone, it would soften.
Even if I complained of love to a rock, it would soften

من غير ذنب اللَه المستعان
Do not forsake one who loves you,
Do not abandon one who loves you
For no fault—God is the one whose help is sought.
Without sin, Allah is the one I implore

When you are near, nothing else fills my sight
But you; the heart is full of you.
Except you, so my heart is full of you

Do not ask about the extent of my longing
For my tears interpret what is within me.
For my tears from within me are interpreters

But for my tears and wasting illness, I would not have revealed it.
If not for my tears and grief, I would not express
A person may speak by means other than the tongue.

Nor for one enamored of the beautiful and refined

For love of a slender-waisted, supple one with sweet, dusky lips,
With a love more fervent than sweet water I yearn
Languid of gaze, a bough with delicate fingertips.
For the delicate branch, the gentle gazelle of Lebanon

Until she returns from among the maidens of Heaven
