My Indian-steel sword has no edge to match its own,

and my grandfather is Ahmad.

أقدّ به هامة معاندي قد

وأهدّه هدّ

With it I cleave my adversary's head clean through,

and crush him utterly.

وهز لنا عند المبارزة جد

قول مؤكد

And our brandishing in single combat is in earnest—

an assured declaration.

من حدّ إذا قمنا ومن له حدّ

اللَه يشهد

Who can hold us back when we rise, and who has an edge?

God bears witness.

وفضلنا يشهد بكل مشهد

الأب عن جدّ

And our excellence bears witness in every gathering,

passed from grandfather to father.

العيدروس الأب والسويني

كألف فارس

Al-Aydarus, the father, and al-Suwayni

are like a thousand horsemen.

وكم أسود قائمة بعوني

وربّ حارس

And how many lions stand ready to aid me,

and many a guardian!

كأنه قد ظنّ يهملوني

بالقهر تاعس

As though he thought they would neglect me—

wretched from being overpowered.

ما مهرتك يا حاسدي ستحمد

وليس تسعد

Your filly, O you who envy me, will win no praise,

nor will you prosper.

وسوف تنظر أينا له اليد

ومن يؤيد

And you will see which of us has the upper hand,

and who is supported.

بدر السعادة قد قرب طلوعه

فسوف يظهر

The full moon of happiness is close to rising,

so it will appear.

إذا بدا كل الشهب تطيعه

ولو تأخر

When it appears, all the shooting stars obey it,

even if it is delayed.

غصن زكيّ أصله معا فروعه

وزهره أثمر

A pure bough, pure in root and branches alike,

and its blossoms have borne fruit.

فيا بن شمس الدين قم تأكد

فحربنا شدّ

So, son of Shams al-Din, arise and be assured:

for our warfare is fierce.

فسوف تنهب يا فتى وتبعد

وابنك يقيد

So you will be plundered, young man, and banished,

and your son will be shackled.
