    my grievous afflictions—

from him whose scent wafts on the winds,

whose beauty mark sets him above all the fair.

    Love lays everything bare;

nothing remains of my reason but a shred of restraint.

    By God, O beloved,

O you who hold dominion over the fair,

your saliva is the bees’ harvest,

furrowing my cheeks with their ceaseless flow.

O my enchanter, be gentle with me,

The burning anguish is not quenched

unless I behold the slender-fingered one,

    the peerless one, the slayer,

for love of whom my soul is oppressed.

    By God, O gathered company,

    listen to the verses
