ويعلمand he knows سقميmy illness ويبخلand he is miserly بطبهwith his remedy
How strange! Why does my beloved keep his lover waiting?
How strange is my beloved's procrastination of love
He knows my sickness, yet withholds his remedy.
He knows my sickness yet is stingy with the cure
ألاAh! ماwhat لقلبيwith my heart جنبerred فيهover it غضبهhis anger
إذاif كانit was جانبat fault فكيفthen how شاwill أقولI speak بهabout it
Ah, what has my heart done to incur his anger?
Why does my heart harbor his anger
If it is at fault, what shall I say about it?
When he's my companion, how can I speak ill of him?
حرامهshame on him! حرامهshame on him! قتلنيkilled me ظلامهhis injustice
وكلفنيand he made me أشربI drink صويفيpure (diminutive) المدامهthe wine
Shame on him, shame on him! His injustice has killed me.
His abandonment, his abandonment has killed me, his darkness
And he made me drink the pure wine.
And burdened me to drink the wine of separation

Tell me, why has he forsaken me—why?
Why do you say he has deserted me, why?
And my poor heart—what was its sin?
While my poor heart, what was its crime?

When evening falls, it sighs; when night draws on,
When the evening sighs, when the night falls
When the light stirs softly and my dawn breathes,
When dawn whispers, my breath sighs

I remember the pearly-toothed one, with a cup-like mouth and narcissus in his eyes.
I remembered his hazel eyes like narcissus
Quince and mirror are like his chest and his ankle.
His leg a branch, his chest a hill

Be gentle with yourself, my love, and beware of pride.
Slow down my love, beware of going astray
Will you burn my little heart, though your love has settled within it?
You set my heart on fire, your love dwells within

If you burn my heart, who will heal it?
If you inflame my heart, who then can heal it?
With you rest its affairs, its distance and its nearness.
To you has my soul gone, both far and near

ومنand whoever يحرمis denied الحبّlove لاno شكdoubt مغبونcheated
I marvel at the reproachers—what are they saying?
How strange are the flirts, what can they say?
And whoever is denied love is surely cheated.
Those who forbid love are surely misguided

They want me to cease loving; far beyond reach is what they want.
They aspire to a distant goal, but they will not reach it
Let them leave my heart alone; its lord will guide it.
They leave my heart for its Lord to arrange
