كم ذا التهافت على الحطام

ومدّة أعمارنا قليل

How long this scramble for worldly debris,

While the span of our lives is short!

نروم ما لاله يرام

من البقا وهو مستحيل

We seek what cannot be attained—

Lasting life, though it is impossible.

أعمارنا دؤب في انخرام

أعمارنا دؤب في انخرام

أما أملنا أمل طويل

أما أملنا أمل طويل

Our lives are ceaselessly being cut short,

Yet our hope is a long-drawn hope.

لو قيل تبقوا على الدوام

لو قيل تبقوا على الدوام

ما زاد في حصرنا فتيل

ما زاد في حصرنا فتيل

If we were told, 'You will remain forever,'

Our miserliness would not increase by a thread.

أمر فصبر بنا جميل

No power, no power, O young man!

A trial—so gracious patience befits us.

كأنّ قد حادى الحمام

كأنّ قد حادى الحمام

نادى مناديه بالرحيل

نادى مناديه بالرحيل

As though death has already sung us onward,

Its herald has called for departure.

وعمّ أجسامنا السقام

وعمّ أجسامنا السقام

وأصخى الصحيح منا عليل

وأصخى الصحيح منا عليل

And sickness has pervaded our bodies,

And the healthy among us have become ill.

ومن له فيك اهتمام

ومن له فيك اهتمام

ما نصرته لك سوى العويل

ما نصرته لك سوى العويل

And whoever has concern for you,

His help for you is nothing but wailing.

وأين نوح وأين سام

وأين نوح وأين سام

كم جيل يتبعه إثر جيل

كم جيل يتبعه إثر جيل

And where is Noah, and where is Shem?

How many a generation is followed by the next!

وكم عزير له احترام

وكم عزير له احترام

أضحى وحيد الفنا ذليل

أضحى وحيد الفنا ذليل

And how many an Uzayr, held in esteem,

Has become solitary and abased in death.

يا قلب في الحرص كم هيام

يا قلب في الحرص كم هيام

وكم ترد موردا وبيل

وكم ترد موردا وبيل

O heart, how you wander, crazed with greed!

And how often you reach a perilous watering-place!

قد فاز أهل التقى الكرام

قد فاز أهل التقى الكرام

وعاقبة أمرهم جميل

وعاقبة أمرهم جميل

The noble people of piety have indeed triumphed,

And the outcome of their affairs is fair.

ما فات لا عاد والسلام

ما فات لا عاد والسلام

ولا لنسمتك من بديل

ولا لنسمتك من بديل

What has passed will not return—and peace.

And there is no substitute for your soul.

فقف لربك في الالتزام

فقف لربك في الالتزام

فالخطب يا سيدي جليل

فالخطب يا سيدي جليل

So stand firm in devotion to your Lord,

For the matter is grave, my master.

أنحن أيقاظ أم نيام

أنحن أيقاظ أم نيام

أم فكرنا قد غدا كليل

أم فكرنا قد غدا كليل

Are we awake or asleep?

Or has our thinking already grown dull?

وان شككنا بذا الكلام

وان شككنا بذا الكلام

نحتاج للشمس من دليل

نحتاج للشمس من دليل

And if we doubt these words,

We would need proof of the sun.

سبحان من أبدع الأنام

سبحان من أبدع الأنام

فنعم من كافل كفيل

فنعم من كافل كفيل

Glory be to Him who created all creatures,

And how excellent a guardian and guarantor He is!

أعمى البصائر فلا تشام

أعمى البصائر فلا تشام

عن المحلات لا تحيل

عن المحلات لا تحيل

He blinded inner vision, so it cannot be glimpsed [wording unclear];

It does not shift away from the dwelling places.

وخير ما ينبغي ختام

وخير ما ينبغي ختام

ذكر النبي السيد الجليل

ذكر النبي السيد الجليل

And the best fitting conclusion is

Remembrance of the Prophet, the exalted master.

صلاة ربي مع السلام

صلاة ربي مع السلام

عليه ذي المرتقى الأثيل

عليه ذي المرتقى الأثيل

May my Lord's blessings, together with peace,

Be upon him, possessor of the noble station.
