Doves of the grove, how often you warble

Among the sanctuary’s ben trees, and coo!

So why will you not let us sleep?

And you, O doves, do not slumber either.

Weep in longing for a beloved kept far away,

    Like me—for we are lovesick.

So no blame rests on you; repeat your song

For a lovesick lover who finds relief and listens.

Doves, by God, I have been stirred to sorrow

By the sweetness of your voice—give me more.

For your voice has stirred my heart

Toward the one who bewildered my mind’s very core.

May God curse everyone who reproached me

For love, and whoever censured me.

And by my Lord, I listen to no faultfinder,

Nor will I relent and obey.

In love I have cast off my bridle,

And I have been given pure wine to drink.

My night passed along with my day

    In festivals, serenity, and joys.

So I care nothing for any foe,

If I attain my desire, O friend.

It is forbidden for me not to warble,

And to rely on any innovator.

    May God abase every lover

Who shares his love with another,

And whoever is held fast by attachments,

And whoever listens to every mortal.

So may no hypocrite attain his wishes,

Nor anyone whose nature is indolence.

Nor does the parched one [reading uncertain] reap the fruit of his work,

Nor does cowardice of heart avail.

So none attains the desired goal, O friend,

Except one who is real amid all that is other,

And whoever follows the path of elucidation:

The texts of sacred law and the spiritual path.

And whoever passes beyond the density of bodily forms

    Goes forth nourished by Reality.

Worthy of union, he finds bliss.

And may God bless the accepted intercessor.
