تلاف المهج لا بالسيوف البواتر
By dark, tear-streaming, languid eyes,
souls are destroyed, not by cleaving swords.

وحبهم قد انطوى في ضمائري
Their dwelling is in the valley of Zarud—rather, in my thoughts.
And love for them lies enfolded in my inmost thoughts.

والمحبّ في قلق من فراق أو فرق
The road is sleepless, and the heart burns.
And the lover is restless with parting or fear.

So have I any ally in love—and who would stand by me?
For love's tyranny overpowers every conqueror.

Wondrous is the health of one who declares his love.
And separation is his torment; it has melted his soul.

His sleep is scant in the dark, pitch-black nights.
The radiant, shining stars bear witness against me.

For if you tasted what I have tasted, you would excuse me.

I am indeed too absorbed for rebuke or blame.
My abasement for him is sweet to me; Qays loved madly before me.

And how many great men have been consumed by love!

the Prophet's presence, exalted beyond any describer's description.
And among his miracles: the full moon split in two for him.
