Reciters have eluded me, O son of Salim.
I yearned for poets, O Ibn Suleim,
And my tongue refused to set my poetry aright.
Yet my father refused my tongue to craft poetry.

And my breast seethed with what I mutter,
My heart overflowed with grief,
And my demon complained of me for my foreign speech.
And my inner demons mocked my ineloquence.

And eyes passed me by because my color was
Eyes promised my complexion
Jet-black, dark among the colors.
Would remain as darkened among colors.

كيفhow احتالI might contrive حيلةa means لبيانيfor my expression
And I turned matters over, from back to belly:
Fate turned matters upside down -
How could I contrive a means to express myself?
How cleverly it blocked my expression!

So I wished that, in poetry, I were
I wished I had been eloquent in verse
Eloquent, even with some of my fingers severed.
So my talents could partially shine.

Then I had made my riding camels kneel
Yet I stumbled in my steps
Before one whose courtyard and camel-watering grounds are spacious.
By the vastness of sky and land.

أشتكيI complain of كربتيmy distress وماand what قدalready عنانيhas afflicted me
So to whom but you, O son of Salim,
So to whom but you, O Ibn Suleim,
Can I complain of my distress and what has afflicted me?
Can I complain of my plight and what has pained me?
فاكفنيso relieve me ماwhat يضيقfalls short عنهof it ذراعيmy arm

So relieve me of what exceeds my arm's reach,
Relieve me of what my arms cannot encompass
With an eloquent speaker among the worthy youths,
With an eloquent and righteous young man

فإنfor indeed البيانclear expression قدalready أعيانيhas defeated me
Who makes people understand the poetry I utter,
Who can make people understand my poetry,
For clear expression has defeated me.
For expression has evaded me.

Then hold me to gratitude, O son of Salim,
Then thank me, O Ibn Suleim,
Wherever my dwelling may be among the lands.
Wherever my abode in the lands may be.

In your praise, racing ahead on every tongue.
With each tongue racing toward you.
