لاَmay not دَرَّflow دَرُّbounty اللَيَالِيthe nights كَيَفَhow تُضحِكُنَاmake us laugh
مِنْهَاfrom them خُطُوبٌcalamities أعَاجِيبٌastonishing وَتُبْكِينَاand make us weep
May no bounty flow from the nights! How we are made to laugh
The nights do not cease passing, making us laugh
by their astonishing calamities—and made to weep!
With wonders and mysteries or making us weep.
وَمِثْلُand the like of مَاwhat تُحْدِثُbring about الأيَامُthe days مِنْof غِيَرٍreversals
يَاO ابْنَson of الزُّبَيْرهal-Zubayr عَنِaway from الدُّنْيَاthe world تُسَلِّينَاmake us forget
And such reversals as the days bring about
Just as the days bring about changes beyond expectations—
make us forget this world, O son of al-Zubayr.
O son of Zubayr, take us away from this life and console us!
كُناwe used to نَجِيءُwe come ابْنَson of عَبَّاسٍAbbas فَيَقْبِسنَاso he imparts to us
عِلْماًknowledge وَيُكْسِبُنَاand earns us أجْراًa reward وَيهْدِينَاand guides us
We used to visit Ibn Abbas, and he would impart to us
We used to visit Ibn ‘Abbas and he would enlighten us
knowledge, earn us reward, and guide us.
With knowledge, reward us, and guide us.
وَلاَand not يَزَالُceases عُبَيْدُUbayd اللَّهِAllah مُتْرَعَةًbrimful
جِفَانُهُhis bowls مُطْعِماًfeeding ضَيْفاًa guest وَمِسْكِينَاand a poor person
And Ubayd Allah ever keeps brimful
And ‘Ubayd Allah's generosity never ceases—
his bowls, feeding guests and the poor.
His hands feeding guests and the poor.
فَالبِرُّso goodness وَالدّينُand religion وَالدُّنْيَاand worldly goods بِدَارِهِمَاin their home
ننَالُwe obtain مِنْهَاfrom it الَّذِيthat which نَبْغِيwe seek إذَاwhenever شِينَاwe wish
So goodness, faith, and worldly goods are in their home;
Righteousness, religion and worldly things are in their homes.
from it we gain what we seek whenever we wish.
We obtain from them what we desire when we frequent them.
إنindeed النَّبِيthe Prophet هُوَhe النُّورُthe light الَّذِيwhich كُشِفَتْwas dispelled
بِهِthrough it عِمَايَاتُblindness بَاقِينَاour living وَمَاضِينَاand our departed
Indeed, the Prophet is the light by which was dispelled
The Prophet is the light by which the darknesses
the blindness of our living and our departed.
Of our past and future were dispelled.
وَرَهْطُهُand his clan عِصْمَةٌa safeguard فِيin دِينِنَاour religion وَلَهُمْand they have
فَضْلٌeminence عَلَيْنَاover us وَحَقُّand a right واجِبٌbinding فِينَاamong us
And his clan is a safeguard in our faith, and they have
His tribe is our protection in religion. They have
eminence over us and a binding claim upon us.
Merit over us and rights incumbent upon us.
وَلَسْتَand you are not فَاعْلَمْهُso know it أوْلَىmore entitled مِنْهُمُthan they رَحِماًthrough kinship
يَاO ابْنَson of الزُّبَيْرِal-Zubayr وَلاَnor أوْلَىmore entitled بِهِto him دِينَاthrough religion
And you have—know this—no greater claim than they through kinship,
And you know, O son of Zubayr, none are closer to them in ties
O son of al-Zubayr, nor a greater claim to him through faith.
Of kinship nor precedent in religion than us.
فَفِيمَso why تَمْنَعَهمyou keep them away عَنَّاfrom us وَتَمْنَعُنَاand you keep us away
مِنْهُمْfrom them وَتُؤْذِيهِمُand you hurt them فِينَاon our account وَتُؤْذِينَاand you hurt us
Why, then, do you keep them from us and keep us
So why do you prevent them from us and prevent us from them?
from them, and hurt them on our account, and hurt us?
Why do you hurt them regarding us and hurt us?
لَنْwill not يُؤْتِيَgrant اللهُGod مَنْone whom أخْزَىHe has disgraced بِبُغْضِهِمfor hating them
فِيin الدّينِreligion عِزاhonor وَلاَnor فِيin الأرْضِthe earth تَمْكِينَاfirm authority
God will never grant one He has disgraced for hating them
God will not grant victory or empowerment in the land
honor in religion, nor firm authority on earth.
To one who disgraces them out of hatred in religion.
