with silvered, partitioned, and mingled patterns.

It sipped a cloud’s saliva just before dawn,

as a lover sips the lips of the beloved.

وطردت في أكنافها ملك الصبا

وقعدت وستوزرت كل أديبِ

Within its bounds I drove out the king of the east wind,

and took my seat and made every man of letters my minister.

وأدرت فيها اللهو حق مداره

مع كل وضاح الجبين حسيبِ

And there I set revelry revolving in its rightful orbit,

with every radiant-browed man of noble lineage.
