I see a man longing for his life to be prolonged,

yet in its length lie humiliation's burden and death.

In the days of youth I wished that I

might be granted long life; lifespans are, no doubt, allotted portions.

Then, when what I had wished for came to me, it grieved me—

the span of life I had once desired and longed for.

My thoughts make me envision, when I am alone,

my being borne upon necks, the march moving swiftly.

Ailments have beset me, their ordeal weighing heavily

upon me, and anguish from which there is no relief.

And the breeze's passing and soothing breath remind me

of pits overlaid with layers of earth.

And here I am in my ninety-first year,

which stirs within me fearsome thunder and lightning.

They say, "An antidote benefits one like you,"

yet no antidote is mine but mercy.
