I came forward, leaving no authority to anyone of prior standing.

Such has long been my wont with enemies and in generosity.

its wild beasts' strides before him; he lengthens them by putting the beasts to flight.

As when a hawk passes soaring through the open sky,

the weaker birds see it as death decreed for them.

Though I am young, in the first bloom of life,

how many keen minds my insight has inspired through my resolve!

I was first to reach the utmost heights of every virtue,

elusive to their seekers, Arabs and non-Arabs.

Rhymes were made my slaves, because I

have encompassed all humankind's learning in my knowledge.

My glory refuses to see me as a poet

whose desires make him count taking a prize as profit.

For no fair-minded man whom eminence has borne aloft

would deem my foot's arch above him a disgrace.

But I offer praise to those worthy of it,

and hold it too high to give it to a dullard.

So, at times it is prose for which knee-bindings are loosened,

and at times verse by which minds are taken captive.

Verse whose eloquence is lawful magic,

whose meanings delight, even with winter woven into it.

It holds itself aloof from all but a great man of enduring fame,

who honors the supreme wisdom within it.

Were it not for the eminence of the king whose equal is rare

throughout time—Farrukhshah, of the loftiest honor—

the remoteness of my goal would have left me thirsty, and I would not have reached

through him a sweet watering place, nor an abundant source to drink from.

Whenever the peerless men of lofty virtues are counted, he is

the first to be named and the last to be named.

His right hand rains upon the hopes of supplicants,

as his stout spears have made blood gush in war.

He went to the utmost and beyond in courage and generosity,

so he annihilated humankind in war and enriched them in peace.

And he has remained a mountain of deliberation and wisdom,

and a star in his remoteness from committing any vile deed.

He gained his glory from his father, after his grandfather,

and from his uncle, glory that spread—indeed, became universal.

And, by God, his own glorious deeds had no need

of lineage linking him to a father—no, nor to an uncle.

Hold, Izz al-Din! You have left no aspiration

that can rise to where you have risen, nor even a fancy.

    You have mastered, beyond all kings, every art of governance;

their failure in it has become a brand upon them.

And you were given the forbearance of gray hair in youth's first freshness,

just as you surpassed them in judgment before reaching puberty.

And you are such that, were you to task every refined man,

he would strive to understand; you would be burdening them unjustly.

You gain no further grandeur through my praise,

but from praising you I gain magnificent honor.

May you endure through time in the shade of a blessing,

bringing misery to the rebellious and bliss to the obedient.

So those content with you are sought out, and those who hope in you inspire hope,

and your succor is sought, and your rain is implored to pour.
