    Free your heart from longing and from dread.

    Nor spend the night pinning hopes on a friend.

    For you are among men: if you saw through them,

    you would discern nothing but treachery and guile.

    ثم ارعويت إِلى السلوان والملل

    Before you, I too was beguiled by their affection;

    then I came to my senses, turning to forgetfulness and weariness.

    نصرت لا يطبَّي سمعي سوى العذل

    And I used to hear—indeed—reproaches concerning them;

    I was aided [reading uncertain]; nothing beguiles my ear but reproach.

    فاللوم في الأصل مركوز وفي البدل

    So shun them, and seek no substitute for their companionship;

    for blame is rooted in the original and the substitute.

    والخب يجمع بين الصاب والعسل

    Their tongues are honey, their deeds bitter colocynth;

    and the deceiver mixes bitter sap with honey.

    Their bodies concealed savage souls

    of dogs, and displayed the form of a man.

    Whenever you seek affection from someone envious,

    with your sincere affection, you neither succeed nor attain it.
