By God I swear solemn oaths,

and by the Book that is recited and believed in:

if I had a thousand tongues with which to pour out

my longing for you, they would not encompass what I feel.

And if my correspondence has ever been late,

that cannot be held against the affection of one like me.

I am one whose suffering cannot be reckoned—

suffering from passionate longing—by description or number.

Pages cannot hold my lament for me to set it down,

nor can the mounts stride swiftly beneath love's burdens.

Your dwelling has never lacked my messengers and my letters

without my mind being filled with remembrance of you.

And I do not deny my shortcomings, despite my passion,

but I rely on my good opinion of you.
