We have heard of kings’ poetry, and all of it,

when the shaft-straightener bites its two flanks, bends—

except what we have seen from Imruʾ al-Qays; for we

see him as unrivaled whenever al-Fath does not compose verse.

He remained for a time, listening to words in silence,

and we thought that, if he tried, he would strike hard ground and solid rock.

Then, when he mounted it as a rider, its unruliness grew tame,

and he rode on, till he had crossed lowlands and uplands.
