    Turning away was mentioned to the one I love, so he turned away.

    And he seemed to jest about abandonment, then grew serious.

    Why does he turn from me to another,

    when no one, in my eyes, is his equal?

    Do not try to catch al-Fadl off guard—and who

    seeks an unguarded moment in the lion's thicket?

    A king through whom we ward off what we fear,

    and through him we mend what has gone wrong among us.

    وإذا ما أنجَزَ الفضلُ وَعَدْ

    People fulfill their pledges when they have promised;

    but when al-Fadl has fulfilled, he promises.
