So I answered it when it called me, despite the distance.

My remedy for the sickness of longing is to kiss his grave.

Who, then, could grant that I might rub my cheek in his dust?

O promptings of passion, I have no need of you,

And I have enough to bear from the loss of youth.

Drawing near the grave of the Prophet Muhammad

Is my utmost aim—oh, if only I might attain it!

O tears of my eyelids, help me bear my sorrow,

Though I have not quenched the ardent longing within me.

And his countenance is like the full moon at an auspicious rising.

On the night of the Night Journey, he drew near his Lord's throne.

What a Lord so near—and what a servant!

From the day he was sent, all who opposed him were struck

By calamitous afflictions exceeding all bounds.

His enemies' ruin through the aid granted him,

Which the All-Merciful bestowed on him from ages past,

    ويدفَعُ عنه اليأسَ مُذ كانَ في المَهدِ

    Is the God of creation's defense against whatever grieves him;

And He has kept despair from him since he was in the cradle.
