I have been aided in love since they went to Najd,
They brought me succor when passions burned within,
By tears that now bear witness to my longing.
Tears for desire of them are my witness.
خذtake حديثيmy account بعدafter سُكُّانthe dwellers الحِمَىthe sanctuary

Take my account, now that the sanctuary’s dwellers have gone;
Hear my words when fever's violence is o'er;
For it is related on the authority of my heart and my eye.
From my heart and eyes they're not dismissed.
ياO جفونيmy eyelids بعدهمafter them أينwhere الكَرىsleep
ياO فؤاديmy heart أينwhere ذاكthat الجُلَدُfortitude
O my eyelids, after their departure, where is sleep?
O my eyes, after them where's caution now?
O my heart, where is that fortitude?
O my heart, where is your fortitude?
فعلواthey did ماwhat أَوعدواthey threatened منof هجرهمtheir abandonment
ليتهمwould that they لوif أنجزواhad fulfilled ماwhat وعدواthey promised
They carried out the abandonment they had threatened;
What they promised of estrangement they did;
If only they had fulfilled what they promised!
Would that what they promised they'd conclude!

And with my soul I would ransom a young gazelle: there quivers from
In my soul is a trembling like a bough
His swaying form a supple bough.
Of ply-wood made shaky by the pooling rain.
أباI (assuming أبا is a typo for أنا) فيin شرعthe law of الهوىlove عَبدٌa slave لهto him
وهوَand he ليto me إنif كانhe is يرضىwilling سَيِّدُa master
I am his slave under love’s law,
My master in love's creed is one its slave,
And he is my master, if he is willing.
And if he's pleased with me then I'm its lord.
