لا تلمني يا سيدي شرَفَ الدِّي
نِending of al-Din إذاif ماemphatic particle رأَيتَنيyou see me قَصَّاباًa butcher
نِ إذا ما رأَيتَني قَصَّاباً
Do not blame me, my lord Sharaf al-Din,
if you see me as a butcher.
كيفhow لاnot أشكرُI thank الجزارةَbutchery ماas long as عشlive (word continues)
كيف لا أشكرُ الجزارةَ ما عش
تُI (ending of the preceding verb) حِفَاظاًout of loyalty وأَرفضُand I reject الآدَاباliterature
تُ حِفَاظاً وأَرفضُ الآدَابا
How can I not thank butchery as long as I live,
out of loyalty, and renounce literature?
وبِهاand through it أضحَتِhave come to الكلابُthe dogs تُرَجِّيlook to with hope
وبِها أضحَتِ الكلابُ تُرَجِّي
نيme وبالشِّعرِand through poetry كنتI used to أرجوI look to with hope الكِلاباthe dogs
ني وبالشِّعرِ كنت أرجو الكِلابا
And through it, dogs have come to look to
me; through poetry, I used to look to dogs.
