تَرَكتُI left الخُمورَthe wines لأَربابِهاto their devotees
وَاقبلتُand I turned أَشرَبُI drink ماءًwater قُراحاpure
I left the wines to their devotees,
I left wines to their owners
I have left wine to its devotees,
And turned to drinking pure water.
And came to drink fresh water
And turned to drinking pure water.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was حيناًfor a time بِهاwith them مُغرَماًenamored
كحبّlike the love of الغلامِthe youth الفَتاةَthe maiden الرَداحاfull-hipped
And for a time I had been enamored of them,
I was once enamored with them
Though for a time I was infatuated with it,
Like a youth's love for a full-hipped maiden.
Like a boy's love for a flirtatious girl
Like a young boy's love for a voluptuous girl.
فَلَمso did not يَبقَremain فيin الصَدرِthe breast مِنof حبّهاlove for them
سِوىexcept أَنthat إِذاwhen ذُكِرتthey were mentioned قُلتُI said آحاah!
So nothing of my love for them remained in my breast,
Nothing of that love remains in my chest
So nothing remains in my chest of love for it,
Except that, when they were mentioned, I said, “Ah!”
Except sometimes I sigh when it is mentioned
Except that when it is mentioned, I sigh, "Ah!"
وَماand not كانَwas تَركيmy giving up لَهاof them أَنَّنيthat I
يَخافُfears نَديميmy drinking companion عَليَّfor me اِفتِضاحاdisgrace
Nor was my giving them up because
It wasn't fear of scandal from my friend
And my abandoning it was not because
My drinking companion feared disgrace for me,
That made me leave it
My drinking companion feared disgrace for me,
وَلَكِنَّbut قَوليmy saying لَهُto him مَرحَباًwelcome
وَأَهلاًand welcome مَعwith السَهلِease واِنعِمand fare well صَباحاin the morning
But rather because I said to him, “Welcome,
Rather I say to it “Hello!”
But rather, my saying to him: "Welcome,
And welcome, with ease; have a pleasant morning!”
“Welcome!” along with ease and a good morning
You are among family, be at ease, and a good morning."
