Turn aside to the monastery’s shore; ask the deacons about her.

A tawny wine that wine itself has sanctified.

Red, yellow after mixing—you would take her

For Bilqis atop a throne of ruby.

She showed us the pure beauty of her face, and lifted

The veil for us at al-Tur’s monastery, bringing solace.

How often I spent the night drinking her beneath the darkness of night,

With the patriarchs, as you poured her for the priests.

We wandered with her among monks who had withdrawn in devotion

At the hermitages, seeking the sacred laws.

We come to the churches while the dark nights have donned

The robe of darkness, and we do not see the church bells.

I asked Thomas, since he was her cupbearer.

He answered in symbols, having imitated the peacocks.

I was told of Sham'un’s time; the news of her came from

    Yushaf, Tuma, Yuhanna, and Jirjis:

That she unveiled herself on al-Tur, and forth burst

Her lights; so she became fire and solace.

And she is the wine; set free now are

Her cups from the vats of 'where,' from their very founding.

Mixed and unmixed we drank her; how often she cast away

With her meteors, kinds of tangled grief.

From me to me she appeared in existence, and vanished

From me the mirrors; she was the very essence in disguise.

So I became neither he, beyond 'where,' nor I.

Take shelter in the shadow when it has become fivefold.

And the secret of that shadow came to tell me

Of Adam, the eye of the Names, and Iblis.

So the witness became the witnessed, and banished from himself

Threefold illusion, and fourfold and fivefold divisions.

By God, halt, O patriarch: there have been unveiled

Phantoms in the mirrors of existence, to be effaced.

So draw in their reins within existence, and be annihilated through it

Away from it; be its very essence at midday and in the predawn darkness.

What has passed in existence becomes present—

Its times—when the measures have been annihilated.

And a present became past for us, when united were

Our times, and we related the drinking on Jesus’ authority.
