وأعلم حقا أن بعدي عنكم

لذنب جرى لكنني تبت من كبر

And I truly know that my distance from you

I know for certain that my distance from you

Is due to a sin that occurred—but I have repented of pride.

Is due to a sin, though I have repented from arrogance

تجلى لطور القلب فأندك هيبة

تجلى لطور القلب فأندك هيبة

وحق الحق حقا بناظر

وحق الحق حقا بناظر

He revealed himself to the mountain of the heart, and it crumbled in awe.

The glory of the heart's mountain was revealed, so it shook with awe

And the Real was truly established through a beholder.

And the right of the right is the right, truly, to the beholder

تجلى حبيبي للقلوب بعينه

تجلى حبيبي للقلوب بعينه

فهيمني غيبا بسطوة قاهر

فهيمني غيبا بسطوة قاهر

My beloved revealed himself to hearts in his very essence.

My beloved revealed himself to hearts through his eyes

So he enraptured me in the unseen with a subduer’s might.

So he overwhelmed me, unseen, with his overwhelming power

ومن ذا يطيق الصبر إن هي بدت

ومن ذا يطيق الصبر إن هي بدت

على بسط التلوين طورا لظاهر

على بسط التلوين طورا لظاهر

And who can remain patient if she appears

And who can endure patience if she appears

Upon the carpets of changing states, at times, to one outwardly manifest?

On the expanse of variations, as a mount to the witness?

تبدت لأكواني بعين جمالها

تبدت لأكواني بعين جمالها

فلبت وقرت ثم هامت كحائر

فلبت وقرت ثم هامت كحائر

She appeared to my worlds in the very essence of her beauty.

She appeared to my innermost being through the eye of her beauty

So they answered and grew still, then wandered like one bewildered.

So I swooned and settled, then wandered lost like one perplexed

وأبصرها لحظي وذلك لحظها

وأبصرها لحظي وذلك لحظها

فكنت بها منها سميعا لحاجر

فكنت بها منها سميعا لحاجر

My gaze beheld her, and that was her gaze.

And my gaze saw her, and that was her gaze upon me

So through her, from her, I became a listener to a restrainer.

So through her I was hearing to the whisperer

تقادمني حب وذلك حبها

تقادمني حب وذلك حبها

فثم أحاط الستر بين المنابر

فثم أحاط الستر بين المنابر

A love long preceded me, and that was her love.

Love brought me to her, and that was her love to me

So there the veil closed round between the pulpits.

So the veil covered between the pulpits

وما ثم غير في الحقيقة ظاهر

وما ثم غير في الحقيقة ظاهر

لمن دق أو قد ران بين الضمائر

لمن دق أو قد ران بين الضمائر

And no other is manifest there in reality,

And there is none manifest in reality but the Witness

For one who has grown subtle, or has already prevailed among the inner selves.

To whoever knocked or glanced between the consciences

فما ثمّ إلا الوهم وهي حقيقة

فما ثمّ إلا الوهم وهي حقيقة

وكل وراء فهو شيء كسائر

وكل وراء فهو شيء كسائر

So there is nothing there but illusion, while she is reality.

So there is nothing but illusion, and she is the reality

And everything beyond is a thing like the rest.

And all beyond is something like the rest
