كتابُكَyour letter سَيِّديmy master جَلَّيdispelled هُموميmy worries
وجَلَّand grew great بهِthrough it اغتِباطيmy delight وابتِهاجيand my joy
Your letter, my master, dispelled my worries,
Your book, my lord, dispelled my worries,
And through it my delight and joy grew great.
And with it came my joy and delight.
كِتابٌa letter فيin سرائرهِits inner depths سُرورٌjoy
مُناجِيهِone who communes with it مِنَfrom الأحزانِsorrows ناجيdelivered
A letter whose inner depths hold joy;
A book whose secrets hold such gladness,
One who communes with it is delivered from sorrows.
To Sorrows it's a comforting confidant.
فكْمso how many معنىًa meaning بديعٍwondrous تْحتَbeneath لَفظٍa word
هُناكَthere تزاوَجَاthe two were wedded أيَّwhat a ازدِواجِunion
How many a wondrous meaning lies beneath a word!
What fine ideas beneath each word,
There the two are wedded—what a union!
Mingled there in clearest wedding trousseau.
كَراحٍlike wine فيin زُجاجٍglass بلrather كَرُوحٍlike a soul
سَرتْcoursed فيin جسمِa body مُعتدلِbalanced المِزاجِtemperament
Like wine in a glass—rather, like a soul
Like wind inside a glass, nay like a soul
That has coursed through a body of balanced temperament.
That filled a body temperate and fair.
