إذاwhen جدَّدَrenews الرَّحمنُthe All-Merciful عِندَكَwith you نِعمَةٌa blessing
إذا جدَّدَ الرَّحمنُ عِندَكَ نِعمَةٌ
فجَدِّدْthen renew لَهاfor it شُكراًthanks لُيؤْنسَهاso as to comfort it الشُّكرُgratitude
فجَدِّدْ لَها شُكراً لُيؤْنسَها الشُّكرُ
When the All-Merciful grants you a new blessing,
then renew your thanks for it, so gratitude may comfort it.
وأَحسِنْand be generous قِراهاhospitality to it تَستقِرَّit will stay فإنَّنهاfor indeed it
وأَحسِنْ قِراها تَستقِرَّ فإنَّنها
نَوارٌskittish ومِنand among أضدادِهاits foes الجَحْدُdenial والكُفْرُand ingratitude
نَوارٌ ومِن أضدادِها الجَحْدُ والكُفْرُ
And welcome it well, and it will stay, for it
is skittish, and among its foes are denial and ingratitude.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle أُحِلَّتْis lodged نِعمَةٌa blessing دارَin an abode غُربَةٍof estrangement
إذا ما أُحِلَّتْ نِعمَةٌ دارَ غُربَةٍ
وأوحشَهاand makes it lonely الكُفرانُingratitude آنسَهاcomforts it الذَّكْرُremembrance
وأوحشَها الكُفرانُ آنسَها الذَّكْرُ
When a blessing is lodged in an unfamiliar home,
and ingratitude makes it lonely, remembrance comforts it.
