ماnot مِثلُهاlike it دارُan abode ولاnor حِلَّهْa settlement
What a splendid settlement Nishapur is!
No abode or settlement is like it.
وَللخَيْرُand for goodness والمَيْرُand provisions بهاin it كَثْرَةٌabundance
لَلَشَّرُّfor evil والضَّيْرand harm بِهاin it قِلَّهْscarcity
And goodness and provisions abound there;
evil and harm are scarce there.

In it are noble men, eminent lords;
they have surpassed lords and grandees.

Its only flaw lies in its officials:
for stinginess and withholding are their creed.

They have dried up; in their clay there is nothing for one
who squeezes it—not even a trace of moisture.

So this is the opening of my address to them;
and after it comes what rends the curtain.
