يا مَن غدا دينُهُ قَولاً بلا عَمَلٍ
مَطَلْتَyou stalled والمَطْلُand stalling عَينُthe very essence of المَنعِwithholding والبُخْلِand miserliness
مَطَلْتَ والمَطْلُ عَينُ المَنعِ والبُخْلِ
O you whose religion has become words without deeds,
O you whose religion is but words without deeds,
You stalled, and stalling is the very essence of withholding and miserliness.
You've been delaying while delay is the mark of stinginess and miserliness,
لّماwhen أتَيْتُكَI came to you مُمْتاحاًseeking a draught أخاpossessed of غُلِلٍburning thirst
لّما أتَيْتُكَ مُمْتاحاً أخا غُلِلٍ
سقيْتَنيyou gave me to drink عَلَلاًsuccessive draughts منfrom بارِدِcold العِلَلِexcuses
سقيْتَني عَلَلاً من بارِدِ العِلَلِ
When I came to you seeking a draught, a man burning with thirst,
When I came to you fettered, O stingy brother,
You gave me draught after draught of cold excuses.
You gave me diluted wine from chilled jugs.
