لبستُ بها بُرْدَ الفَخارِ قَشيبا
May God water the days of youth, for I
O Time, shower the days of my youth with rain
Wore in them a fresh mantle of glory.
For I have worn the coarse cloak of old age.

على سَخَطٍ منِّي المَفارقَ شيبا
I neglected—not through ignorance—the hospitality due them; so they left
I misspent them not in ignorance but they fled
My hair-partings gray, much to my displeasure.
Away from me in anger, leaving me with gray hair.
