O lovely delight of our bygone days,

O the bliss of days gone by for us,

and sweet delight of youthful days—return!

And the sweetness of youth's morn I do recall,

أيّام أسحَبُ ذَيلي في بَطالَتِها

على تَرَنُّمِ ضَربِ النّايِ والعُودِ

على تَرَنُّمِ ضَربِ النّايِ والعُودِ

Days when I trailed my robe's hem in their idle ease,

Days when I would let my robe's train drag lazily

to the lilting music of the flute and oud,

To the murmur of flute and lute's gentle lilt,

وقَهوةٍ وسُلافِ الدَّنِّ صافيةٍ

وقَهوةٍ وسُلافِ الدَّنِّ صافيةٍ

كالمِسكِ والعنَبرِ الهِنديِّ والعُودِ

كالمِسكِ والعنَبرِ الهِنديِّ والعُودِ

and wine, and the jar's clear, choicest wine,

Coffee's aroma and wine pure as perfume,

like musk, Indian ambergris, and aloeswood.

Like musk, ambergris and aloeswood fragrant,

تَستَلُّ روحَكَ في أمْنٍ وفي دَعةٍ

تَستَلُّ روحَكَ في أمْنٍ وفي دَعةٍ

إذا جرَتْ مِنك مجرى الماءِ في العُودِ

إذا جرَتْ مِنك مجرى الماءِ في العُودِ

It draws out your soul in safety and ease,

That would steal your soul in such great ease and peace,

when it flows through you as water flows through a stem.

Flowing through you as water flows in wood.
