الناسُ أكثرهم إذا فتشتهم

بُعداءُ عن سننِ التقيةِ والهُدَى

Most people, if you examine them,

Most people, if you examine them,

are far from the paths of piety and right guidance.

Are enemies of piety and right guidance.

فاحذرهُم ما استطعتَ إن وارءَهم

فاحذرهُم ما استطعتَ إن وارءَهم

شراً أحَدَّ من الأسنةِ والمُدى

شراً أحَدَّ من الأسنةِ والمُدى

So beware of them as much as you can, for behind them lies

So beware of them as much as you can, for behind them

evil sharper than spearheads and knives.

Lies evil sharper than blades and spears.

وإذا سلمتَ على امرئ فاشكر له

وإذا سلمتَ على امرئ فاشكر له

ما كفَّ عنكَ من الأذى فهو الندى

ما كفَّ عنكَ من الأذى فهو الندى

And when you greet a man, thank him

And if you greet a man, thank him

for whatever harm he has withheld from you, for that is generosity.

For sparing you from harm, for that is nobility.
