لوِ ارْتاحَ الزَّمانُ إلى عِتابي

لوِ ارْتاحَ الزَّمانُ إلى عِتابي

وأنصَفَ سائليهِ في الجَوابِ

وأنصَفَ سائليهِ في الجَوابِ

If Time were receptive to my reproach,

If time were to rest from blaming me,

and answered its petitioners fairly,

And answer my questions fairly,

لما عاتبْتُهُ إلاَّ على ما

لما عاتبْتُهُ إلاَّ على ما

أغارَ عَليَّ من شَرخِ الشَّبابِ

أغارَ عَليَّ من شَرخِ الشَّبابِ

I would reproach it only for what

I would not reproach it, except for

it plundered from me of youth’s prime,

What it stole from me of the bloom of youth,

ومن بَهَجَاتِ أيَّامٍ سَرتْ بي

ومن بَهَجَاتِ أيَّامٍ سَرتْ بي

إلى فَلكِ البُروجِ من التُّراب

إلى فَلكِ البُروجِ من التُّراب

and of the joys of days that carried me

And the delights of days that carried me

from the dust to the sphere of the zodiac.

To the celestial sphere from the dust.

تَحَفَّفْ بي ووفَّتْني حُظوظي

تَحَفَّفْ بي ووفَّتْني حُظوظي

وصفَّتْ مَشْرَبي وكَفَتْ طِلابي

وصفَّتْ مَشْرَبي وكَفَتْ طِلابي

Gather around me; my fortunes paid me in full,

It endowed me and fulfilled my fortunes,

and made my draught clear and satisfied my quest.

Quenched my thirst and sufficed my needs.
