    If God has poisoned me,

and cared for me with kindness,

if I have become an outcast

    in the regions of Khurasan,

    ةِ التَّغميضِ أجفاني

    and shunned—estranged from the pleasure

    of closing are my eyelids;

    وأَظْلافٍ توطّاني

    and trampled beneath padded feet

    and cloven hooves that tread on me;

    and driven to hatred

    by my ruler's turning away,

then what excuse have I before one who has no

    equal in excellence,

except that, in excellence, I am

    unique, with no equal?

Gray hair has claimed my temples,

    unique, with no equal.

Gray hair has claimed my temples,

then my branches, and has worn me away.

As though the aim of the misfortunes

of my times were to cripple me.

    If time should favor me

and leave me with my close friends,

and give me my watering places,

and let me tread my homelands,

then may I never return to exile

as long as night and day recur.
