كتبْتُ إليه أستهديهِ وَصْلاً

كتبْتُ إليه أستهديهِ وَصْلاً

فأقلقَني بوَعدٍ في الجَوابِ

I wrote to him, asking him to grant me union.

I wrote to him seeking reunion

He made me anxious with a promise in his reply.

But his reply disquieted me with a promise

ألا ليتَ الجَوابَ يكونُ حقّاً

ألا ليتَ الجَوابَ يكونُ حقّاً

فيَشفي ما أحاطَ مِنَ الجوى بي

فيَشفي ما أحاطَ مِنَ الجوى بي

Ah, if only the reply would prove true,

If only his answer were true

and so heal the anguish that has engulfed me.

It would heal my abundant sorrows
