أرىI see المالَwealth يُفنيهconsumes it ويُبليand wears out جديدَهُits freshness
حوائجneeds تغدوcome in the morning أوor جوائحcalamities تطرقُvisit by night
I see wealth consumed and its freshness worn away
I see wealth destroying and wearing out its novelty
by needs that come each morning or calamities that visit by night.
Needs keep arising or calamities keep striking
فذوso the possessor of الحزمprudence فيin أطوارِهِhis ways واختيارهand his choice
ينفقُmakes flourish سوقَthe market of المكرماتِnoble deeds وينفِقُand spends
So the prudent man, in his ways and choices,
So the resolute in his circumstances and his choices
makes the market of noble deeds flourish and spends,
Spends freely on noble deeds and spends
ويعلمُand knows أنthat المجدglory أشرفُthe noblest قنيةٍpossession
وأنand that نسيمَthe breeze of الشكرِgratitude أذكىsweeter-scented وأعبقُand more fragrant
and knows that glory is the noblest possession,
And knows glory is the noblest earning
and that the breeze of gratitude is sweeter and more fragrant.
And the breeze of gratitude is the sweetest and most fragrant
فأنفِقso spend علىon الخيراتِgood deeds مالَكَyour wealth واثقاًconfident
بأنَّin the fact that الذيthe One who أفنىdepleted سيُقنيwill grant wealth ويرزقُand provide
So spend your wealth on good deeds, confident
So spend your wealth on good, confident
that the One who depleted it will grant wealth and provide.
That He who made it fade will provide and sustain
ودعand leave لحزاًill-tempered وغداًbase جموحاًheadstrong مصرداًstingy in giving
ليشقىso he may suffer بأخلاقِfrom the traits of اللئامِthe ignoble كماas شَقُواthey suffered
And leave the ill-tempered, base, headstrong miser
And leave the spiteful, tomorrow arrogant and restive
to suffer from the traits of the ignoble, as they have suffered.
To suffer with the traits of villains as they made others suffer
فلمfor ... not أرَI have seen مثلَthe like of المالِwealth أعجبَmore wondrous قصّةًa tale
إذاwhen أنصفَjudges fairly المرءُthe person اللبيبُwise المحقِّقُdiscerning
For I have seen no tale more wondrous than wealth's,
Never have I seen anything stranger than wealth
when a wise, discerning man judges fairly:
When the wise and judicious man is fair
يُفَرِّقُscatters شملَthe unity of المجدِglory إمَّاif جمعتَهُyou amass it
ويجمعُand gathers أشتاتthe scattered parts of العُلاgreatness إذwhen يُفرَّقُit is scattered
it sunders glory's unity if you amass it,
It splits the unity of glory when you gather it
and gathers the scattered parts of greatness when it is scattered.
And gathers the pieces of eminence when you split it
وقالواand they said طريقُthe path to الرزقِlivelihood فيon الأرضِearth واسعٌbroad
فقلتُso I said ولكنand yet مَطلَبُthe pursuit of الرزقِlivelihood ضَيِّقُnarrow
And they said, 'The path to livelihood on earth is broad.'
And they said the path of sustenance on earth is vast
So I said, 'Yet the pursuit of livelihood is narrow:
So I said but seeking sustenance is narrow
إذاif لمnot يكنthere is فيon الأرضearth حرa noble man يعيننيhelps me
ولمand ... not يكthere is ليfor me كسبُearnings فمنthen from أينwhere أرزقُam I to be sustained
if there is no noble man on earth to help me,
If there is no free person on earth to help me
and I have no earnings, then where will my sustenance come from?'
And I have no earnings, from where will I be provided?
