أرى المرءَ يرجو أن يطول بقاؤُهُ

أرى المرءَ يرجو أن يطول بقاؤُهُ

ليُدركَ ما يهوَى بطولِ بقائِه

ليُدركَ ما يهوَى بطولِ بقائِه

I see a man hoping that his life will be long,

so that, by living longer, he may attain what he desires.

وأيَّةُ جَدوى في البقاءِ وقدْ وهَتْ

وأيَّةُ جَدوى في البقاءِ وقدْ وهَتْ

وأَقْوى قلبُهُ من ذكائِهِ

وأَقْوى قلبُهُ من ذكائِهِ

And what good is there in living on, when weakness has set in

and his heart has become empty of its intelligence?

إذا مانَبا حِسٌّ وكلَّتْ بَصيرةٌ

إذا مانَبا حِسٌّ وكلَّتْ بَصيرةٌ

فطولُ بقاءِ المرء طولُ شقائهِ

فطولُ بقاءِ المرء طولُ شقائهِ

When perception falters and insight grows weary,

then the length of a man's life is the length of his misery.
