ضللتُI strayed عنِfrom المقاصِدِthe aims فيin مَعاشيmy livelihood
وآيَسَنيand made me despair الزَّمانُtime مِنof انتِعاشيmy recovery
I have strayed from my aims in seeking my livelihood,
And time has made me despair of recovery.
وذاكَand that لأنَّنيbecause I أبداًforever مُلقّىًbeset
بأحوالٍby circumstances تحلُّundo رَبيطَthe steadfastness of جاشيmy heart
And that is because I am forever beset
By circumstances that undo my heart's firm resolve,
وأفكارٍand thoughts تَمْضُّtorment بَناتِthe daughters of قلبيmy heart
وأسفارٍand journeys يقَضُّbecomes gritty لهاbecause of them فِراشيmy bed
And thoughts that torment the daughters of my heart,
And journeys that make my bed gritty.
ألاis there no مثوىًresting place أحُطُّI set down بهِat it رِحاليmy baggage
وأرفَأُand I mend فيهin it رَثّاًwhat is tattered منof مَعاشيmy livelihood
Is there no resting place where I may set down my baggage
And there mend the tatters of my livelihood?
ألاis there no حُرُّnoble man إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle انحَصَّhas fallen out ريشيmy plumage
I place my hope in him لتَثميرِfor increasing الرِّياشِwealth and finery
Is there no noble man, when my feathers have fallen out,
Whom I may look to for an increase in wealth?
فَمنْso whoever يَكُmay be مِنthrough مَعاشٍa livelihood فيin ضَياعٍloss
فإنِّيthen indeed I منthrough مَعاشيmy livelihood فيin مَعاشِMaʿāsh (apparently a place name)
So if anyone is lost in seeking a livelihood,
I, through seeking mine, find myself in Maʿāsh.
