أغِثْgive aid! أيُّهاO الشَّيخُthe venerable elder الوزيُرthe vizier فإنَّنيfor indeed I
أغِثْ أيُّها الشَّيخُ الوزيُر فإنَّني
دُهِيتُI was afflicted بماby what قدalready كنتُI was قبلُbefore أخافُI fear
دُهِيتُ بما قد كنتُ قبلُ أخافُ
Help me, O venerable vizier, for I
O Sheikh the Minister, come to my aid, for
have been struck by what I had feared before.
I have been struck by that which I had feared before.
عُزِلْتُI was dismissed ولمand not أعجَزْI fail ولمand not أكُI was خائفاًafraid
عُزِلْتُ ولم أعجَزْ ولم أكُ خائفاً
وذاكَand that لإنصافto the fairness of الوزيرthe vizier خِلافُcontrary
وذاكَ لإنصاف الوزير خِلافُ
I was dismissed, though I had not failed and was not afraid,
I was dismissed though I did not fail, nor was I afraid,
and that is contrary to the vizier’s fairness.
And that was due to the minister's injustice.
حُذِفْتُI was struck out وغَيريand someone other than me مثبَتٌretained فيin مَكانِهِhis place
حُذِفْتُ وغَيري مثبَتٌ في مَكانِهِ
كأنِّيَas though I were نونُthe letter nūn الجَمعِof the plural حينَwhen تُضافُit is placed in a construct phrase
كأنِّيَ نونُ الجَمعِ حينَ تُضافُ
I was struck out, while another remains in his place,
I was excluded while others kept their places,
as though I were the plural’s nūn when a construct phrase is formed.
As if I were the extra Nun in a plural word.
