لئِنeven if كَسَفوناthey have eclipsed us بِلاwithout عِلَّةٍcause
لئِن كَسَفونا بِلا عِلَّةٍ
وفازَتْand have won قِداحٌهُمْtheir gaming arrows بالظَّفَرْwith victory
وفازَتْ قِداحٌهُمْ بالظَّفَرْ
Even if they have eclipsed us without cause,
Even if their ships prevailed without cause
and their gaming arrows have won victory,
And their wine cups were blessed with victory
فقدfor it may be that يكسِفُeclipses المَرءَa man مَنْone who دونَهُis beneath him
فقد يكسِفُ المَرءَ مَنْ دونَهُ
كماjust as يكسِفُeclipses الشّمسَthe sun جُرْمُthe orb of القَمَرْthe moon
كما يكسِفُ الشّمسَ جُرْمُ القَمَرْ
for a man may be eclipsed by one beneath him,
Yet a man may be eclipsed by one less than him
just as the moon’s orb eclipses the sun.
As the sun is eclipsed by the moon's sphere
