في كتاب أخصُّهُ أو قَريضِ

في كتاب أخصُّهُ أو قَريضِ

Do not blame me for an inconsistency you see

Blame me not for the unrest you see

in a piece of writing I single out, or in verse;

In a poem I hold most dear or recite

فأعَزُّ الأشياء عندي وُجوداً

صِحَّةُ القَولِ في الزَّمانِ المَريضِ

for the rarest thing to find, in my view,

For what I cherish most in life

is soundness of speech in an ailing age.

Is honesty of word in sickened time
