وغَزالٍ كُلُّ مَنْ شبَّهَهُ

وغَزالٍ كُلُّ مَنْ شبَّهَهُ

بِهلالٍ أو ببَدْرِ ظَلَمَهْ

بِهلالٍ أو ببَدْرِ ظَلَمَهْ

And a gazelle—everyone who likened him

Each one who likened a gazelle to

to a crescent or a full moon wronged him.

a new moon or to a darkened full moon

قالَ إذْ قبَّلتُ بالوَهمِ فَمهُ

قالَ إذْ قبَّلتُ بالوَهمِ فَمهُ

قدْ تعدَّيْتَ وأسرَفْتَ فَمَهْ

قدْ تعدَّيْتَ وأسرَفْتَ فَمَهْ

He said, when I kissed his mouth in imagination:

Said, when in fantasy I kissed its mouth:

“You have overstepped and gone too far—so stop!”

"You have gone too far and overdone it, now stop!"
