Where are the generations, sons of generations,

And the lords of cities and fortresses,

And those who were overbearing in assem-

blies, and haughty in people's eyes?

They were kings—so which of them

Was not destroyed by the ravages of death?

Or which of them was not found in

The abode of decay, pledged beyond redemption?

And indeed they lived a life

    That was not beneath them.

    إِنَّ الحَديثَ لَذو شُجونِ

    They became a tale after their passing;

Indeed, the tale has many branches.

    And time—unceasing are the won-

ders of its vicissitudes—is rich in forms.

Within it, there must be, for one who trusts the

    days, a treacherous day.
