نَسأَلُwe ask اللَهَGod بِماwith what يَقضيHe decrees الرِضىcontentment
حَسبِيَenough for me اللَهُGod فَماso whatever شاءَHe willed قَضىHe decreed
We ask God for contentment with what He decrees.
We ask Allah for what brings satisfaction
God is enough for me; whatever He wills, He decrees.
Allah is enough for me, whatever He decrees
قَدindeed أَرَدناwe wished فَأبىbut refused اللَهُGod لَناfor us
وَأَرادَand willed اللَهُGod شَيئاًsomething فَمَضىso it came to pass
We wished, but God denied us our wish;
We intended, but Allah refused for us
And God willed something, and it came to pass.
And Allah willed something, so it was done
رُبَّmany a أَمرٍmatter بِتُّI spent the night قَدalready أَبرَمتُهُI firmly settled it
ثُمَّthen ماnot أَسبَحتُI reached morning حَتّىuntil انتَقَضاit came undone
Many a matter I went to bed having firmly settled,
How often I tied a firm knot
Then, before I reached morning, it had come undone.
Then did not wake until it came undone
كَمhow many وَكَمand how many مِنof هَنَةٍa trifle مَحقورَةٍdespised
تَرَكَتleft قَوماًpeople كَثيراًmany حَرَضاwasting away
How many, how many a despised trifle
So many resolved matters
Has left many people wasting away.
Left many people stirred up
رُبَّmany a عَيشٍlife لِأُناسٍfor people سَلَفواthey went before
كانَexisted ثُمَّthen انقَرَضواthey passed away وَانقَرَضاand it ended
Many a life of people gone before
Lives of past peoples
Once was; then they passed away, and it too ended.
Existed, then vanished and were gone
عَجَباًwhat a wonder لِلمَوتِat death ماhow أَفظَعَهُdreadful it is
مَنwhom رَأَيناwe saw ماتَdied إِلّاexcept رُفِضاwas cast aside
I marvel at death—how dreadful it is!
How terrible death is
Whom have we seen die without being cast aside?
Whoever we saw died, dispatched away
رُفِضَwas cast aside المَيِّتُthe dead man مِنfrom ساعَتِهِhis hour
وَجَفاهُand forsook him أَهلُهُhis family حينَwhen قَضىhe died
The dead man is cast aside at once,
The dead is cast off in his hour
And his family forsakes him when he dies.
His family abandons him when he's gone
شَرُّthe worst أَيّاميmy days هُوَis اليَومُthe day الَّذيthat
أَقبَلُI accept الدُنياthis world بِدينيfor my faith عِوَضاin exchange
The worst of my days is the day when
The worst of my days is when
I accept this world in exchange for my faith.
I face the world as recompense for my debt
