The intoxication of youth is madness.

And people are high and low.

    And affairs have outward aspects

That appear to us, and conjectures.

    And time has its twists,

    Just as branches bend.

    Among minds are smooth plains,

    Well-known, and rugged ground.

    مِنهُنَّ كَزٌّ حَرونُ

    Among them are supple, compliant ones;

Among them are rigid, obstinate ones.

Indeed, even if betrayed by one

I love, I do not betray.

    I use conjecture only

    Where conjectures are permissible.

O you who have grown dissolute, slow down!

    Your wantonness has lasted long.

    هَوَّنتَ ما لا يَهونُ

    You have made light of the nights’ cruelty;

You have made light of what is no light matter.

Oh, if only I knew, when

You are buried, how you will fare!

If you were left lying lifeless,

And eyes had wept for you,

    Little benefit would you gain

From tears streaming down for you.

    Never trust the nights,

For every one of them is treacherous.

    ما مِثلُهُنَّ سُجونُ

    Indeed, graves are prisons;

    No prisons are like them.

How many generations lie in graves,

Of those who passed away—and generations more!

    No face in the graveyards

    Is protected from the dust.

It will surely destroy us all,

    Even though we loathe it—Death.

    As for souls, they owe

    Their debts to death.

Death is not kept from those

Who dwell in fortresses, by the fortresses themselves.

    Death takes no rest

From pursuing us, while we are at rest.
