بَعدَafter لَهوٍamusement وَشَبابٍand youth وَمَرَحand merriment
The gray in my hair appeared and became plain,
Gray hair appeared on my head and became plain,
after diversion, youth, and merriment.
after amusement, youth, and merriment.

يَدَعِleave المَوتُdeath لِذيfor one possessing لُبٍّunderstanding فَرَحjoy
So we amused ourselves and lived in delight; but then
So we made merry and lived in ease; then no
death left no joy to anyone endowed with understanding.
joy did death leave for anyone of sound mind.
ياO بَنيchildren of آدَمَAdam صونواsafeguard دينَكُمyour faith
يَنبَغيit is fitting لِلدينِfor faith أَنthat لاnot يُطَّرَحbe cast aside
O children of Adam, safeguard your faith;
O children of Adam, safeguard your faith;
faith ought not to be cast aside.
faith ought not to be cast aside.
وَاحمَدواand praise اللَهَGod الَّذيwho أَكرَمَكُمhonored you

And praise God, who honored you
And praise God, who honored you
with a Prophet who arose among you and gave sincere counsel;
with a prophet who stood among you and gave sincere counsel.
بِنَبيٍّwith a prophet فَتَحَopened up اللَهُGod بِهِthrough him

with a Prophet through whom God opened
With a prophet through whom God opened up
every good you have attained, and made it plain.
all the good you attained, and made it plain.
مُرسَلٌa messenger لَوif يُوزَنُwere weighed الناسُpeople بِهِagainst him
فيin التُقىpiety وَالبِرِّand righteousness شالواthey would rise on the scales وَرَجَحand he would weigh heavier
A Messenger—were all humankind weighed against him
A messenger—if people were weighed against him
in piety and righteousness, they would prove light, and he would outweigh them.
in piety and righteousness, they would rise and he would weigh heavier.
فَرَسولُso the Messenger اللَهِof God أَولىmost worthy بِالعُلىof exalted rank
وَرَسولُand the Messenger اللَهِof God أَولىmost worthy بِالمِدَحof praise
For the Messenger of God is most worthy of the heights,
Thus God's Messenger is most worthy of exalted rank,
and the Messenger of God is most worthy of praise.
and God's Messenger is most worthy of praise.
