    Take heed, O humankind!

In death there is a lesson for you.

For some purpose, O children of Eve,

Saqar has indeed been set up for you.

Is death not our final end?

Then where are fear and caution?

I saw that death does not spare

    anyone, nor let anyone remain.

To hasten the approach of appointed ends,

the sun and moon run their courses.

    Exalted is God! What do

the days and vicissitudes bring about?

    And nothing withstands time's vicissitudes:

    neither youth nor old age.

    And ever a funeral bier

is borne along by a band of men.

I saw the armies of the dead,

so tears welled up in my eye.

    A dwelling where they have

neither cloaks over them nor chambers.

The roofs of their houses over

there are mud and clods of earth.

Naked, how often they have vanished,

and how often they once were present!

And how often they went late in the day

to pleasures, and set out early!

So departure has pressed hard upon them,

on a journey that is the journey.

And they have now come to a dwelling

whose news, from outside, is only conjecture.

And how often they reveled wantonly,

and how often they were ungratefully proud!

And their dwellings have fallen to ruin,

so neither a visible remnant nor a trace remains.

    Reflect, O deluded one,

    before thoughts elude you.

For all that you have deemed great

    is despised at death.

And do not be deceived by this world,

for all of it is deception.

And tell those deceived by it:

Take your time! Take heed and wait!

For the ultimate end of the appointed time

for us lies in the grave-pits.

Such is the changing course of the days:

in them are serenity and trouble.
