Pitiable is he whom this world has beguiled with his hopes.

How often the world has toyed with his like.

The one intent on this world forgets his death,

Through his long comings and goings within it.

And time's vicissitudes never cease to beguile him,

Until they snare him by the edge of his robe.

    Neither nights nor days allow

Anything in this world to endure unchanged.

Woe to the deluded ignorant man—how he refused

To bring death to mind while in this world.

A man is saved by what he has sent ahead in the

World: his kindness and gracious conduct there.

O you who will die tomorrow, what have you prepared for the anguish

Of death, amid its overwhelming agonies and terrors?

A man of righteousness and piety dies, and you envy his lot,

Yet you do not strive to match him in even a few of his deeds.

    فَاللَهُ أَفضَلُ مَسؤولٍ لِسُؤآلِه

    Through God, have no need of anyone you used to petition;

For God is the best one to petition.
